What's Happening to the UCLA
Athletic Script Logo?
The new institutional logo is separate from the traditional UCLA
script logo used by athletics.
You'll continue to see the script logo for athletics, spirit and
student groups, on sportswear, as a Marching Band formation and
as a Rally Committee card stunt, etc. But the new graphic identity
system distinguishes between athletic and institutional logos -
a distinction that's common at major universitities.
The more casual, sporty personality that makes the script terrific
for athletics is not a good fit for UCLA's academic, research and
service enterprises. The new UCLA logo is designed for use across
a broad range of offerings, from world arts and cultures to hospitals,
education, digital media, bioengineering and public affairs. The
goal of the new graphic identity system is to unify the presentation
of UCLA's logo for these broad offerings within a coordinated system.
The new system replaces a hodgepodge of visuals -- literally hundreds
of different logos -- that resulted in a fragmented graphic identity
and inefficient use of design resources (click
here to see what we mean).
